Dr. McLaughlin grew up in Northern Virginia but has lived up and down the East Coast. She got her B.S. in Biology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1991, with a minor in Theater Arts. She stayed in Blacksburg for her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, graduating from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. She has four cats at home.
